I have just downloaded Avast antivirus and previously had AVG 8.5.
Please could you advise me if i should uninstall the AVG one and just stick to Avast.I do know that some AV's can work against each other.

You just need one or the other, so whichever you are happiest with, better off getting rid of the other.
