JERMAINE BECKFORD struck his fifth goal of the campaign as Leeds equalled their best start to a season.

The only other time they have secured seven straight wins was in 1973 under Don Revie.

Leeds manager Simon Grayson hopes to fend off any last-ditch move for Beckford, 25, from Premier League Bolton ahead of the transfer window closing tomorrow after the striker scored their deserved 64th-minute winner.

Grayson said: "Jermaine scored a real poacher's goal, he has a unique talent and we're delighted to have him."

Beckford could easily have had a hat-trick but twice had 'goals' disallowed for off-side

After just seven minutes, captain Jonathan Howson sent him through to score but the linesman's flag was up.

And eight minutes later, the same official again denied Beckford after good work from fellow striker Luciano Becchio.

Leeds got the breakthrough two minutes after the interval when flank player Bradley Johnson rose unmarked to head home a free-kick from Robert Snodgrass.

Colchester struck back within 10 minutes when striker Kevin Lisbie was fouled by central defender Rui Marques and ref- eree Dave Phillips awarded a penalty from which Lisbie equalised.

Beckford, who was a constant threat throughout after coming through a fitness test to appear in an unchanged side, refused to be denied and he fired home the winner from close range after a mix-up in the defence.
Victory left Leeds level on 15 points with Charlton Athletic at the top of the table and Grayson said: "Our sole aim since pre-season has been promotion. Nothing is going to be decided now – it's a marathon. I actually think there is a lot more to come from my side in certain areas of the pitch but you can't fault them really – it's been a fantastic achievement so far."
