REFORMS of MPs' allowances proposed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown have been welcomed by local politicians.
Mr Brown, who previously ordered a standards review of MPs’ expenses, announced plans to overhaul the allowances system this week after a storm of high profile rows about politicians’ claims.

Proposals include replacing controversial second home allowances with a flat rate daily allowance for attending Parliament, to be published annually.

Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper said: “People have no confidence in the current system which is way out of date.

“We’ve been arguing for major reforms and reductions in allowances.

“These changes would solve a lot of problems and I think they should be brought in as fast as possible with the independent standards committee advising on any further reforms.

“MPs need to travel to and from Westminster and have local offices for constituents but it has got to be a transparent, fair system.”

Wasn't her and her hubby Ed Balls, involved in the expenses scandal to start with

They were from what I remember.

They are all it it. They should not profit from second homes. I believe they should be allocated a room in a block to stay while in London if needed and given a travel ticket for the train, something like a YMCA fro MP's.

Why should they be entitled to claim for household furnishing/appliances/food etc and mortgage costs it's all wrong.

Following a request under the Freedom of Information Act, it has been revealed that our bath plug buying Home Secretary and her porn-loving (but only when the taxpayer funds it) husband have been paying the full amount of council tax for Jacquie's 'second' home in Redditch.

But surely, I hear you cry, her main home is at her sister's house in Nunhead, South London so why would she pay the full whack on the Redditch home?.........unless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really could not make this up.

These troughing swines have now called in the police to investigate how their theft of taxpayer's money was made public.

The Telegraph has a lot of info: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/mps-expenses/

One MP is facing police investigations for his disgusting 2nd home claims when he lived just 3 miles from Westminster, and his constituency was only 11 miles away.  He claimed £60k a year on is parents house.

I hope (yet doubt) he goes to prison for this blatant fraud. The story

Former minister Elliot Morley has been suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party over his expenses claims, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said.
Mr Brown said: "Where standards are transgressed and mistakes are made, we have got to take action.
"That is why today, we have suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party Elliot Morley because of the allegations, which are serious, which have been made against him."
Mr Morley claimed £16,000 for interest on a mortgage that had already been paid off.
Mr Brown said: "Where there is irregularity now, it has got to be dealt with immediately.
"Where standards have been transgressed and the evidence has been shown to be there, action has got to be taken.
"Where disciplinary action is necessary it will, and will immediately, be taken."

Mistakes!!!..... MISTAKES!!!!!!.... too many bloody mistakes for me to trust any of the theiving buggers!!!...

I've always used my vote and have always believed that unless you vote you do not have any right to comment on politics, but when the local elections come arond in June, I will NOT be using my vote.... It matters little to me now who sits for election... no matter who it is, they won't be there to serve me but to serve themselves as all politicians it seems are!
