Career changers could be enticed to the classroom in a new six-month, fast-track training scheme.
Under new Government plans, "outstanding recruits" from professional fields would only train for half the time needed to qualify as a teacher. The aim of the scheme is to make it easier for people to switch careers into teaching.
In another initiative, up to 200 "potentially excellent" school teachers will be able to move into top managerial positions within four years.
The Accelerate to Headship programme will be launched in September 2010 by the National College of School Leadership and recruits will receive personal support towards achieving the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH).
