Polling day is two days away.

Whatever you do, use your vote. I don't care who you vote for (well, I do really) as long as you use your vote.

Remember that not too long ago, people fought against a Nazi tyranny to ensure that we remained free.

It's thanks to them that we can all vote in the way we wish. Not to vote is a smack in the face for those brave people. If you can't bring yourself to vote for anyone, then spoil your ballot paper...they get counted too.

I've been to counts (I've actually stood twice as a candidate in local elections, but that is another story).

Spoiled ballot papers don't get counted, they are put to one side, and if the vote is close enough they may go through them with the consent of whoever is in the frame for victory and some may or may not get counted depending on what agreement interested parties/officials come up with...generally speaking though they are largely discounted.

Baldrick (and others), would you be in favour of mandatory voting?  If so/not, why?

that's an interesting thought... mandatory voting... there have been a few times when i thought i might not vote, but i always did in the end.. i agree with baldrick, it's very important, i think we only had about 50% voter turn-out in our last election, i believe it was a record low

I'm not sure, but I think in Australia they have mandatory voting, and I believe they have a 'none of the above' option for people to register a protest vote.

Why not have manatory voting?
How many times have we heard what a poor turn out theres been on voting days? How can there be a true representation to rule the country when only a small percentage bother to turn out?

The problem with making voting compulsory is that it goes against  basic freedom of choice. We live in a democracy and are able to decide whether to take part in the democratic process or not.

Having said that, I feel that perhaps the advantages of compulsory voting just about outweigh the disadvantages.

Should be interesting to see the results anyway, with proportional representation people's votes do count for more than usual, though in principle I am not a fan of this voting system (however I could be swayed on the matter if faced with a reasonable argument for either case).

Seen some quite amusing spoilt papers in my time, I usually work as a Presiding Officer and Senior Count Officer on elections - some of the things are quite unprintable

I didn't vote.  We had a choice of (former) terrorists, loyalists who turned their back on everything they once stood for, unionists who are totally old-fashioned, sdlp who have become irrelevant as the (former) terrorists have taken all their votes, or green and alliance who let's be honest have no chance so it's a waste of time voting for them.

So, stay at home and study for exams or go and vote for those who have no chance as the others me?

Joe1..That is a sad way of looking at things. First, remember that your fellow countrymen died to get you that vote. No matter what you may think of them now, many of them died to fight tyranny and it is your duty to vote to honour their deaths. You can say, 'They're all a load of shite' and you may well be correct but that does not absolve you from your duty to vote.

Think on.

No, Alan, they're not all the same and as I've just said to Joe1 it is your duty to vote. If you don't vote then don't come whining afterwards and complain that you don't like what 'they've' done: your vote might have changed things.
