Simon Grayson's plans for Leeds United's 2009-10 season have suffered a major blow with the news that defender Richard Naylor could miss the start of the campaign.

Naylor underwent surgery on a back injury in London on Wednesday and is beginning a six-week recovery period, ruling him out of Leeds' pre-season programme and threatening his involvement in their first game of the new term at home to Exeter City.

United kick off their League One campaign at Elland Road on August 8 but Naylor faces a race against timeto be ready for that after addressing a long-standing problem which troubled him last season.

The 31-year-old is unlikely to feature in any of United's forthcoming friendlies, missing next month's tour of Ireland, and manager Grayson looks set to begin the summer without either of the first-choice central defenders who finished last term.

Sam Sodje returned to Reading at the end of his loan spell last month and no attempt has yet been made by Leeds to re-sign the Nigerian international who is available on a free transfer.

Naylor would have been a virtual certainty to be selected by Grayson on the first day of next season but, having attempted to manage the injury, Leeds reluctantly decided to send him for surgery.
